Hazel The hazel is native to Scotland and fairly common in the wild. It is an important element of woodlands in Britain and has a long history of coppice management by humans. Corkscrew hazel (C. avellana 'Contorta') unlike the Common hazel never achieves the stature of a tree but, with its deformed branches and leaves, it is an object of some curiosity. Despite its common name of 'Harry Lauder's walking stick' the Corkscrew hazel was discovered in Gloucestershire in c.1863. In folklore, the hazel is a magical tree - or rather much-branched shrub - supernaturally protected like the Rowan and yet powerful in protecting you against evil spirits and abduction by fairies. It is prized for its wood, its twigs and its nuts. Hazel was valued from the earliest times as a source of small poles and wattling, for hurdles, fences and huts with 'wattle and daub' walls. It appears to have been the first subject of systematic forestry in the South of Britain. The coppice system began in medieval times and involved cutting the woody shoots at intervals of about seven years then allowing them to spring up again from the old stumps. Control of coppices rested with the manorial lord who owned the soil. He sold the resulting crops to the coppice cutters. Cutting was organised on a rotational system, so that there was an area to be harvested each year. Coppices therefore provided a steady source of income and came to be regarded as a form of gilt-edged security. Charles II, for example, in return for favours received, bestowed the income from two New Forest coppices on two of the ladies of his court, as a form of annuity. While hazel coppice wattles provided one form of protection, the tree's nuts provided others. In Ireland, hazel nuts in the pocket were said toward off rheumatism and lumbago while in Scotland the double nut (or St John's nut) was thrown at witches. Today, of course, hazelnuts are hailed by health food enthusiasts as a valuable part of the antioxidant larder by providing Vitamin E, as well as essential fatty acids and B vitamins.
