About This Item

Leaper the Frog

Once upon a time, there was a little green frog. He cannot remember his past life, but feels as if he was well loved by someone, somewhere. All he remembers is suddenly being separated from his person and waking up in the cold, dark pine forest all alone. But then, a geocacher named antbedy and her traveling companion Signal the Frog came along and found him.

It was Leap Day (February 29) 2020. antbedy and Signal were walking along Pacer Path on the campus of the University of South Carolina, Aiken. Leaper tried to call out to them, as he had all of the other walkers, geocachers and runners that had passed him by. None of them had heard his cries, but these two did, and they stopped to see who it was.

Alone in the wild

antbedy and Signal saw a disheveled looking creature lying on the sandy ground. Picking him up, antbedy could see that he was a frog. Signal insisted that they couldn't just leave him lying there, and despite the fact that his once plush coat was matted with dirt and mold, antbedy put him in her backpack. He rode there the rest of the day, coming out to visit some of the geocaches they found.

Once they had returned to their home in Tennessee, antbedy gave the little fellow a much needed bath in the kitchen sink. First he soaked in the warm, soapy water. It felt so good after all the long, lonely days and nights on the cold ground. She then scrubbed him, first with her bare hands, but then with a brush when she saw that the dirt was not coming free of his coat.

The water was as thick and dirty as swamp water, so she released it from the sink, and once again filled it with warm, soapy water. After another long soak, she continued to clean him until she had removed all of the dirt. She then used a hair dryer to begin the drying process. Once he was completely dry, antbedy fed him stuffing to plump him up a little, and repaired a small tear on his back.

The little guy felt like a brand new frog, despite being a bit threadbare in places and having stains on his belly. antbedy decided to name him Leaper since she and Signal had rescued him on Leap Day. She gave him a new necklace to wear, proclaiming him a member of New Cache Order and allowing others to discover him and track his travels.

Leaper will spend the rest of his days leaping from cache to cache all around the world with antbedy and Signal. And they will all live happily ever after.
