OK, when a real rescue is needed, 4 years of being stranded under a tree on a hillside, you have to call in the heavy hitters. While doing our cache maintenance in Pinecliff Park, we researched the real estate in the area. We found an archived cache that still had a travel bug in the inventory. Time for a cache rescue mission by the MD Geocaching Society! Off we went after trying to contact the original owner of the cache to see if he had retrieved it at the time it was archived. With no response, we were off to find the plastic. The sled run has been shortened twice and the cache was near the original top of the run. Since this was on private land, the county had to shorten the run. This left the cache, and the Avalanche, stranded up here as the cache owner archived the listing. This was a good sized hill and must have been a great run at it's longest. The cache was located using the hint as the coords were a might off. GPS technology has come a long way. We found the hiding place but were still not sure the cache was there. It was still well concealed and took a bit of poking to locate it. Once found, it was a tight fit removing it. We quickly moved off the private property before determining if Avalache was still there. Once in a safe location, we opened the container and Avalanche was still there in the very bottom of the cache. Rescued! DC will log the retrieval and I am discovering it and posting a photo for the owners to know their bug, released in Hawaii, is back in business. We have some friends who go to FL a couple of times a year. We will see when their next trip may be so we might be able to get this bug back in the hands of the owners after the long hiatus in the lost cache.
