In 2009 the race starts at Geneva (Switserland). For that reason, the coin starts its race arround the world at the same place.
The Gordon Bennett race was created in 1906 by James Gordon Bennett, an American Press baron and adventurer, to stimulate technical development in aeronautics. The first time it was held, sixteen competing balloons took off from the Tuileries Gardens in Paris.
This international competition is open to free balloons of up to 1000 m3, which nowadays includes all gas balloons.
The rule is simple – they all take off at the same time and the balloon that goes the furthest wins.
The national aeronautics federations can designate up to three crews per country. It is held under the aegis of the International Aeronautical Federation.
The World’s Greatest Gas Balloon Race, first staged in Paris in 1906 before a crowd of over 200,000 people. In September 2010, the 54th Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett will be hosted in Britain for the first time!
