Current Goal

I'm Phineas Frogg. Like that human from literature, I'd like to go around the world in 80 days, but I'll settle for 800 days. I would like to see every continent, (except Antarctica - I'd freeze!), and I'd like to tour as many countries as possible.

Retrieve It from a Cache 12/10/2008 MooseBob retrieved it from Wild View Queensland, Australia   Visit Log

Stolen from the parking lot at Wild View cache.

Dropped Off 12/10/2008 MooseBob placed it in Wild View Queensland, Australia - 3,801.42 miles  Visit Log

While not physically present at this cache, the parking lot 200 metres away was the last known location of this TB before it was stolen. I will make a virtual drop/pickup in order to at least give the TB credit for getting here.

  • Glasshouse Mountains, Queensland. Phineas visits the Glasshouse Mountains in Queensland, Australia. These mountains were named by Captain Cook on his travels through the area.

...and again.

Back on the west coast...in the Cape Naturaliste/Cape Leeuwin area.

  • Canal Rocks, Cape Naturaliste, Western Australia. Phineas spends a day wandering along the coast. Wonderful!
  • Conto's Lookout, Margaret River, Australia. The view from Conto's Lookout cache...unfortunately without Phineas since there was only 1 minute of battery life left in the camera!

You guessed it.

Phineas heads south to visit the coast around Esperance.

  • Fourth Beach, Esperance, Australia. Phineas goes to the beach. Some of the best beaches in the world are around Esperance. Blue water, white squeaky sand, and crowds simply don't exist. Unfortunately, today is a bit too cool and cloudy to swim.
  • Twilight Beach, Esperance, Australia. Twilight Beach near the cache. Twilight Beach was voted the best beach in Australia in 2006. But I like Hellfire Bay just east of Esperance better.

On the road again.

A little trip from Perth to Kalgoorlie.

  • Rabbit Proof Fence, Western Australia. Phineas stops to see the famous Rabbit Proof Fence. This is on the drive from Perth to Kalgoorlie. A fabulous example of the consequences of ecological ignorance! All started by a grazier named Thomas Austin who released 24 rabbits in 1859 just so that he could have a little sport hunting. From 24 to millions...eating everything in their path. The fence was a vain attempt to stop the rabbits from arriving in Western Australia...but they arrived faster than the fence could be built.
  • The Super Pit, Kalgoorlie, Australia. Phineas and the Super Pit. By the time they are done, this open pit gold mine will be one of the biggest open pit mines in the world. The digging goes on 24 hours per day. Prior to 1980's, the pit did not exist and it was all underground mining. And now it's cheaper just to dig the entire thing up! If you look closely, you can see small holes in the pit wall...the remains of old mine shafts and tunnels that the pit is now engulfing. Amazing.

Phineas arrives in Australia!

  • Cottesloe Beach, Perth, Australia. Friday evening...fish and chips...relaxing on the beach...watching the sunset... One could grow to like this life pretty fast! This is not too far from "View to a Rats Nest" cache.
