About This Item

LUCKYSTRIKE1'S OCT. 2007 SPUTNIC GEOCOIN (FRONT)

The coin is a reminder that this October’s not just about costumes and sugar and pranks – it’s also the 50th anniversary of the first artificial satellite to be placed into geocentric orbit around Earth.
The great grandaddy of the satellites we all love and adore and which enables our multi-faceted hobby.

The original satellite transmitted for 22 days and finally fell back to earth on January 4, 1958. I know your coin will outlast the original, but I doubt anyone’s coin will ever meet the 37 million miles Sputnik-1 traveled in its scant 3 months in orbit. Beat that!!

Picked this one up from the world cache in Cambridge, UK even though I've still got stages left to help my team mates. It's a lovely coin and guess it has been languishing long enough. Did you know it was just 2km from the Greenwich Observatory Cambridge.

We'll try and find a nice spot for it this weekend if I don't get to take it with me somewhere nice on business this week.
