About This Item

Michiel de Ruyter was a famous Dutch admiral.

He was born in Flushing in the year 1607. De Ruyter became famous for his role in the Anglo-Dutch Wars of the 17th century. In these wars he fought the French and English and scored several major victories.

Michiel de Ruyter was loved by his sailors and soldiers: they nicknamed him: Bestevaêr (older Dutch for 'grandfather'). In 1676 he was fatally wounded during the Battle of Agosta when a cannonball hit his left leg. On 18 March 1677 De Ruyter was given a state funeral when his body was buried in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.

Michiel de Ruyter is honoured by a statue in his birthplace Vlissingen, where he stands looking over the sea.
