About This Item

Minnesota State Parks
Geocaching History Challenge

In 2008 the state of Minnesota turned 150 years old! And in honor of this anniversary the Minnesota State Parks has organized a statewide Geocaching History Challenge. With 72 state parks there is plenty to keep you busy hunting for caches and moving travel bugs across the state, not to mention the great hikes, photo-worthy views and untouched landscapes you can find along the way to each cache.

Each of Minnesota’s 72 state parks has a special Geocaching History Challenge cache. Inside each cache are collectable park history trading cards and, if you’re lucky, a Minnesota Sesquicentennial medallion.

You can even earn a special silver medallion when you locate all of the state park caches in a region. A total of four regional medallions can be earned.

For those true geocachers who find all 72 Minnesota State Park caches – they can earn a really special gold medallion!

For more information on the Minnesota State Park Geocaching History Challenge visit www.mnstateparks.info.

The Minnesota State Park Geocaching History Challenge will run through December 31, 2008 – so start geocaching!!

What can you say about Split Rock Lighthouse that hasn't been said before. Always a great place to visit. A lot of people miss out on some great scenery when they just visit the lighthouse and don't venture out on the hiking trails. We have never been to the spot that the final cache is located before. All we can say is WOW!!! When we were here on June 7, 2003 and completed the 6.2 mile hiking club trail we were too tired to do anymore exploring so we are glad that this cache brought us to this beautiful spot! It is a beautiful place to visit just before the sun sets. We timed it perfectly at 5:30 PM and got some great pictures.

Retrieve It from a Cache 9/17/2008 dlgps retrieved it from George Crosby Manitou State Park History Challenge Minnesota   Visit Log

Today was a picture perfect day for be outside geocaching and enjoying our north shore state parks. Filled up the 1GB SD card on the road on the way here so had to dig around and find another card before we headed off on our hike. We walked around the lake counter-clockwise from the picnic grounds. It was absolutely beautiful and peaceful!!!

It is nice to be in one of the north shore state parks and NOT be able to hear all the traffic on Hwy 61!!!

While we were eating breakfast at Ryden's this AM we heard the waitress telling someone that they needed to visit Judge Magney State Park and see the Devil's Kettle. She told them that the water that flowed into Devil's Kettle came out somewhere in Mexico. And we wonder where "urban legends" get started!!!

So glad that the State of Minnesota had the good sense to make this special spot into a state park. It is probably goofy but when we sit at home in southern Minnesota and see the weather map of the whole state it is kind of cool to look at that little arrowhead point and know that we have been there! The waterfall is so impressive and some of the birch trees in this park are HUGE!!! We can really imagine the native americans making a canoe out of these beautiful trees.
