The donkey was vital for Crete before the island got a road network and was mainly dependent on agriculture. The stoic and enduring donkey har been replaced by faster and stronger trucks and cars.
The donkey is a social animal, it loves the company of its mates and human beings. It is still been used in many villages. In our little village some people have donkeys and uses them for local transport - to their plots of land around the village.
But a lot of them have been abandoned. The Donkey Sanctuary has been established in Lefkogia. It provides a safe and happy environment for donkeys that come to them either because of ill health of just simply because old age has made it impossible to keap on working.
Lefkogia is a little village on the south coast of Crete in the Rethymnon Province near Preveli/Plakias. You can visit the sanctuary and take one of the donkeys for a walk or ride or simple spend som time with them for company. You can reach the Donkey Sanctuary by car or by bus from Rethymno or. It is about 5-minute walk from the village and follow the signs. It is open every day from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm and from 4:00 to 6:30 pm.
