The mission of this coin is to travel the world visiting caches & benchmarks - picking up stories & pictures along the way...
This coin honors the Bilby Towers used by surveyors for accurate triangulation. The concept of a reusable steel tower originated in 1926 by Jasper S. Bilby, Chief Signalman for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (Now National Geodetic Survey). These towers eliminated the need to build expensive wooden towers which were only used 1 time. The Bilby Tower was made to be 'easily' transported & reassembled at the next location. The towers were made in differing standard heights - the tallest being 159 feet, including extensions. The last Bilby Tower was built in 1984, over 50 years after first conceived.
