Current Goal

To once again unite the two chieftains in the story by preferably stopping in caches that have a Celtic or Iron Age connection on route to : -

1st - Brough, Great Britain.

2nd Paris, France.

3rd travel back to the owner of the coin today, by depositing the coin in the ‘Solent Views’ (GC10HFZ) cache.

If you could spare the time to upload a photo of the cache and/or the related Celtic/Iron age connection it would really make for an interesting story!

About This Item

Parisii

The Story
---------
The year is 52 BC and the Gallic Parisii had joined forces with Suessiones in the rising of Versingetorix against Julius Caesar. The Parisii where defeated and now lead by two gallant tribal chieftains Martsiless and Davhonrabel.

Each chieftain had very different views on the future of the Parisii people.

Martsiless could not imagine a future in Gaul and opted to take half the remaining tribe to the island of Great Britain and set-up a kingdom known as Parisiorum. Its capital was Petuaria.

Davhonrabel opted to strike a bargain with the Romans and a new city Lutetia Parisiorum was born. It soon became an important city in the Roman province of Gallia Lugdunensis.

For a while the bond between these two chieftains was strong, but soon became one sided. Martsiless would put distant family loyalties before those of the chieftain bond that had united the two chiefs. Davhonrabel fearing the breakdown of communication and weakening of the Parisii tribe commissioned a fabulous golden coin to be fashioned from the finest Celtic gold. The coin was made by the chief’s own goldsmith and was four times the size of a regular golden stater. It bore on one side the image of a horse, which was also, the name given to a type of fishing net used by the Parisii on the River Seine and symbolised unity. On the other side of the coin was depicted the head of Martsiless to remind him of the bond between the two chieftains.
