About This Item

Giant Weta

The Giant Weta is a large, brown, flightless grasshopper and its species name, Deinacrida, literally means Demon Grasshopper. It is one of New Zealand's few protected insects and now mainly survives only on offshore islands where it is safe from introduced predators. Giant Wetas can grow over 50mm long and weigh as much as 25 grams. Although fearsome looking, they are actually quite docile and their diet is largely vegetarian. It leads a solitary, nocturnal life, spending the day hidden in vegetation or under stones.

Got you moved to a place where you will likely be picked up soon. I hope you make it back to NZ. I did not see any of your cousins when I was there. maybe next time. Good luck on your journey.

If I had found you a month ago or so I could have brought you home... I spent 10 days in July in NZ studying geology and geothermal resources. I was able to find a cache or two in Rotoroua. But I will move this BUG to a place where it is likley to be picked up and moved soon.
