About This Item

Geo-Catching McCovey

A Hall of Fame player, Willie McCovey batted .270, with 521 home runs. He was Rookie of the Year in 1959, the league's most valuable player in 1969, and led the league in home runs three times.

One of his most famous drives was one that was caught. In the 1962 series, with runners on base, he nailed a pitch with a blistering drive towards right field. Somehow, the second baseman (Bobby Richardson) threw up his glove and caught it -- if the ball had been hit only a few inches away, the Giants would have won it all.

McCovey captured the ideal of a first baseman: 6-foot-4, left-hander, a slow runner, and an awesome slugger. The Giants ballpark now stands next to McCovey Cove, where a statue of this great player can be found.

Recovered the dog tag and very weathered "cards" attached from the "You've got to climb at least this far" cache on Mt. Marathon today. Surprised to find a travel bug hiding with the Micro. Will contact the owner as they requested to send the tag back so it can be reattached with it's "traveler." Still it was a very exciting find for this relatively new geocacher and friends with 5 kids along! We enjoyed finding and singing the micro and the TB was just an added bonus!! Just another excuse to hike in an awesome place on this most beautiful day!

Since this item has long been separated from Willie, perhaps someone would be willing to contact me for my address and mail it to me so I could reattach it to something having to do with McCovey. Thanks!

Like someone already posted, this is a lonely tag without its original traveler. It looked so lonely, I had to rescue it. I will try to create and attach a facsimile before moving it on.

I'm writing this note to correct my log. I discovered the dog tag as I stated today, but I mistakenly posted my original log as "retrieved" instead of "discovered." This will get the TB to show up in the inventory of the Geoscouters cache as it should. Sorry!
