Well, it was darkish and overcast so no pictures. This TB is on Crown Beach in Alameda California, a special beach as far as i'm concerned. Most of San Francisco bay is ringed by development, wetlands and salt ponds. This island in the bay has a nice long sandy beach that you can rest on and gaze across the bay to see the San Francisco skyline - often socked in by fog while you are enjoying the sun. In days gone by the beach was Neptune's Beach, "The Coney Island of the West", visited by San Franciscians via ferry - you can see the SF ferry building from the beach. The TB is at the north end of the beach, in Crab Cove. At the far south end of the beach is a nature preserve that contains the bays largest population of the California Clapper Rail, a very endangered species that is down to a population of 600. Every year Crown Beach hosts a large Sand Castle competition - http://www.geocities.com/alameda02sand and http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-95974-annual_sand_castle_and_sand_sculpture_contest_san_francisco_attractions-i (note that the yahoo map is utterly wrong - you can see alameda island just barely at the right side of the map).
Merry Christmas!
