About This Item

Helmets

1.       One crash kills most helmets. That Styrofoam layer between the shell and your head is your best friend. The expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) crushes under impact to give your head approximately 6/100ths of a second extra stopping time. That 6/100ths of a second can be the difference between you getting back up and riding off and having to relearn the alphabet. The foam also distributes the point of impact over a larger area.

2.       Proper Fit

Your helmet should neither dig into your scalp nor flop around. The better the fit the more protection you will have. To ensure proper adjustment start with the interior pads. Most are held in place with adhesive or hook and loop strips, which can be added or removed to customize fit or to wash when they get dirty. Next adjust the straps so that each V-buckle is positioned right below your ears, then cinch the main buckle so two fingers barely fit between your chin and the strap. To make sure the helmet is fitting correctly push the front of your helmet up. If it moves more than 1 inch, tighten the chin straps. Repeat with the back adjustment.

We were going to hand off the nerd coin to its owner near here when we met for lunch at McDonalds today, but zoesbrother had some bicycle trouble on the way up from Menomonie and couldn't make the lunch date. We ate at McD's anyway, then hopped on over to the Big Fish to let the coin see this Hayward attraction. The Big Fish almost ate the coin!

We took the nerd coin with us to an event in the northern part of Wisconsin, and while the coin wasn't sociable and did not sign the log sheet for the event (sorry, no credit for that then), it did join us on the long up-and-down hike to visit two waterfalls on the trail in Copper Falls State Park.

We had to get the nerd coin relocated to central Wisconsin, so we took it to a spot across Castle Rock Lake from us, the Buckhorn Bridge near the state park of the same name. You should be familiar with the waters of this lake from your triathlons, zoesbrother.
