In the early hours of Boxing Day 2004 one of the largest quakes ever recorded hit the Indian Ocean. The ensuing tsunami hit almost a dozen countries around the Indian Ocean and led to a large-scale human desaster with hundreds of thousands of victims.
Immediately after the initial tsunami, teams from all over the world rushed to the area to help the victims. Among them our basic healthcare unit from the German Red Cross that set up camp at Teunom, Indonesia. Over the next couple of weeks, we received assistance from helicopters out of several countries. One of those helicopters came from Malaysia, so it is fitting for this coin to commemorate this assistance.
