Current Goal

This TB is being used to promote knowledge of alternative wind energy being developed in Benton County, IN (USA). The Fowler Ridge Wind Farm is currently under construction in Benton County, Indiana, around 90 miles northwest of Indianapolis. The wind farm will be completed in two phases and will have a maximum generating capacity of 750 MW total.

The Fowler Ridge Wind Energy Project is the largest wind energy project in the world today (9/08).

About This Item

Modern wind turbines work just like traditional windmills. As the wind turns the blades, its energy is transformed into electricity.

Wind turbines usually have three blades, which spin in the wind. The blades are connected to a rotor, which drives an electricity generator.

When the wind blows, a pocket of low pressure forms on the downside of a turbine blade. This pulls the blade towards it and makes the rotor turn. The rotor is connected to a generator inside [the nacelle of] the turbine – the part that looks like an airplane cockpit.

The electricity created in the generator passes down through cables inside the tower, and then through a transformer onto the national electricity grid.

Modern wind turbines start generating electricity when wind speeds reach 4 metres a second. They cut out when the wind speed reaches storm force – more than 25 metres a second – to avoid damaging the turbine.

Large wind farms in the US – with around 300 turbines – can each produce enough zero-carbon electricity to meet the needs of 120,000 average households annually.

Picked up from Dust to Dust, Swisher Cemetary. Out caching with the grandkids and snagged this one. Introduced the kids to 'doodlebugs' (what we called 'em growing up) since there was a plethora of them at the base of the cache site. Managed to dig one out and showed them how they scoot backwards and flip the dirt up when they are digging their perfect little cone holes.

So this little dancing bear will hitch a ride with me down to the sister's house for our annual 4th of July celebration of my mother's birthday. Always a big deal in our family! Will locate a suitable pit stop for the little bear after we party hearty...wouldn't want him to miss all the fun!
