Grab It (Not from a Cache) 4/23/2012 KEHOE6000 grabbed it   Visit Log

We we're given this item to start a new cache from our sister in Kaneohe as a wedding gift... it has moved to Portland, Oregon and now lives at the Willamette Stone which marked the intersection and origin of the Willamette meridian and Willamette baseline, which defined the grid system of sections and townships from which all real property in the states of Oregon and Washington has been measured following the Donation Land Claim Act of 1850.

The grid defined by the stone extended the Public Land Survey System and was used as the basis of land claims in the Oregon Territory. The first marker, a red cedar stake, was placed on the site on June 4, 1851, by John B. Preston, the first Surveyor General of the Oregon Territory. Preston was appointed by President Millard Fillmore to create a system for surveying land in the territory; he lost his position in 1853, and "drifted into obscurity." The location was chosen such that the base line would not cross the Columbia River and the meridian would lie west of Vancouver Lake. The grid system was an extension of the system used in the Northwest Territory proposed by Thomas Jefferson. The Willamette Stone marked the location of the first townships and ranges north and south of the marker.

We felt that this would be a perfect place to start our first cache due to the significance of the site.

Found with Kaihilani, this was our second trip to the park. This time we decided to do a quick hike starting from the Twin Gates and going to the top where we left last time.

This one was fairly easy to find, in a space that I would suspect a geocache would be placed. Saw some huge cow pies on the way there and some lizards when i got to the cache.

Took Little Miss Giggles and the trackable attached to it. I plan to attach something from the Bay Area or something to Little Miss Giggles and plant it somewhere else in the future.
