This is a piece of pottery I created while working with my students in a Grade 10 Art Class. While this type of create can't be traced back in history, it combines some of the elements.
The look of it is based on a drawing of Roman Architecture that I found. However, instead of a building with a dome, it supports a bowl on top. The bowl is a a nod to the Chinese invention of the water compass. The Chinese model was something that looked like a spoon or a ladle but didn't really fit with the look of what I was building. Below the bowl, I etched a faux compass rose and then strategically glazed the pottery to bring out the lines.
The whole idea to make this into a type of water compass didn't actually occur until I had all the pieces created and was then ready to assemble them. Once I had the idea of turning it into a compass, I thought this would make a great Geocaching Trackable.
