Current Goal

Fernhopper likes to roam in forested areas--loves the coniferous forests of the Pacific Northwest, especially west of the Cascades. Also, loves cloudy weather, especially when it's raining... Fernhopper hates cities and dry flatlands!

About This Item

'Fernhopper' Travel Bug

"Fernhopper" is the nickname for forestry students--and alumni--in the College of Forestry, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon. Ferns, particularly sword ferns, are a common groundcover in the coniferous forests of the Pacific Northwest west of the Cascade Mountain Range. Thus anyone working in these forests has to do a lot of "fern-hopping." Forest Engineer completed his forest engineering studies as a Fernhopper in 1960, and spent the following 25 years "fern-hopping," interspersed with a lot of "riding herd" on desks, and followed by 15 years of land survey project management. It is hoped that "Fernhopper" will endure a lot less stress than Forest Engineer...

The travel bug consists of the TB tag attached to a hopping green frog. Actually, Oregon Staters are beavers, but beavers aren't known for hopping, thus we attached a frog which is known for this mode of movement.

Although I did not actually get this from Birdsong, it is much easier to just say I did, (I actually took it out of a cache about 50 miles from Birdsong that had never been activated.

There were six of us after this one: the TwoFers, Eric and Marianne, Ski and Skeeter. After a nice hike into the park from our campsite, we had to piece together a proper approach from below. We spotted a trail and Eric and MrTwoFer followed it to the meadow, the log, the oak, and the cache. Watch out for poison oak (red in autumn). Eric found the cache in good condition. Took TB, signed log, continued back to Roaring Camp for more caching fun.

Picked up this TB from cwsoots at the Iva-Kay Each-Bay cache, as we stumbled on each other trying to find this cache. Heading towards Bay Area later this month.
