Current Goal

To visit Springer Mountain, Georgia and Mount Kathadin, Maine. Along the way, I would like to visit caches in counties which the AT passes through. Photographs would be appreciated! The highlight of this journey would be to have a photograph of this coin with the northern and southern terminal signs and with any hikers attempting to complete the 2,175 miles of the AT!

About This Item

AT Coin - Final in Series (front)

This coin is entered in memory of thru-hikers Earl Shaffer & Emma "Grandma" Gatewood.

In 1948, Earl Shaffer became the first person to thru-hike the AT, walking the entire Trail from Georgia to Maine. He hiked again—this time from Maine to Georgia—in 1965. On his third thru-hike, 50 years after his first, he became the oldest thru-hiker at age 79, a distinction he held until 2004.

Emma Gatewood, better known as “Grandma Gatewood,” mother of 11 children and grandmother of 23, was 67 when she first hiked the Trail in 1955. In 1957, she completed her second thru-hike at age 69, holding the unofficial title of oldest female thru-hiker for the next 50 years. In 1964, she became the first person to complete the A.T. three time. She was famous for wearing only “Keds” tennis shoes and carrying a small knapsack with little more than an old army blanket and a shower curtain for a tent. According to Sports Illustrated (10/10/55), when asked why she hiked the Appalachian Trail, Emma “Grandma” Gatewood replied, “Because I wanted to.”

Found this while out geocaching along the High Line Canal. I think I will put it in a cache somewhere along the Colorado Trail this spring which would be the perfect spot for it!
