We've really enjoyed taking OBX on some island/beach/lighthouse exploring with us these past few weeks. 🙂

One last visit to the Ogden Point Breakwater lighthouse & then we're letting OBX back into the wild for more adventuring.

Ogden Point is one of our favourite neighbourhood spots...it's where 200+ Alaskan cruise ships come & go all summer long, where divers marvel at the abundant & varied sealife, and where locals & tourists alike stroll the 800 meter breakwater & take in the beautiful ocean views. It's also a favourite spot for newly married couples who use the breakwater as the backdrop for their wedding photo's.

At the very end of the breakwater is an iconic lighthouse marking the entrance to our beautiful Victoria Harbour. OBX smiled for our camera one last time while posing with the Breakwater lighthouse. On the day we visited, a very sunny Sunday, it appeared as though a convention had arrived at the lighthouse! 🙂

Bon Voyage OBX!!

Long Live Svenssonia!

  • Murals @ the Breakwater Look at all those strollers!! These murals are a new addition to the breakwater dedicated in September 2009. Artists Darlene Gait from the Esquimalt Nation and Butch Dick from the Songhees Nation created murals based on centuries-old Songhees and Esquimalt art traditions combined with modern elements.
  • Ogden Point Cruise Ship Terminal Only 1 ship moored today, the Celebrity Mercury, but the terminal can handle 3 cruise ships at a time. The Canadian Coast Guard pilot boats can be seen in the foreground.

We took OBX for a weekend holiday to Campbell River. Initially we were just going to try & get some photo's of OBX with the lighthouse from across Discovery Passage but we decided to make a day of it & took the ferry over to Quadra Island to visit the Cape Mudge Lighthouse & explore the island.

Cape Mudge Lighthouse was built in 1898 and is the only one in BC that is accessible by road and is still staffed and fully operational. Unfortunately there is much controversy as the Canadian Coast Guard has recently made announcements that Cape Mudge is one of four manned lighthouses that they plan on de-staffing & fully automating. There is much opposition to the plan though so the future of the Cape Mudge Lighthouse is still up in the air.

The lighthouse marks the southern entrance to the Discovery Passage, "a significant shipping route as it is the preferred channel for vessels entering or leaving the Georgia Strait from the north, and as such forms a part of the Inside Passage shipping route." It is a very active route for Alaskan bound cruise ships. North of the lighthouse is Seymour Narrows, described by Captain George Vancouver as "one of the vilest stretches of water in the world." Linked by a trail to Cape Mudge Village, the lighthouse is located below the bluffs visited by Captain Vancouver in 1792. Petroglyphs from centuries ago can be found at extremely low tide just south of the lighthouse.

The waters off Cape Mudge have fooled many fine mariners and cost a good many of them their lives. It is in these waters that the tides flowing in from the north and south of Vancouver Island meet in tumultuous union. We witnessed this tumult on the afternoon we visited the lighthouse & took some amazing photo's of the rough waters.

It was a beautiful sunny Saturday & we hope OBX enjoyed his visit to Cape Mudge Lighthouse as much as we did!!

  • Cape Mudge Lighthouse Notice the rough & wild competing tides in the water beyond the lighthouse
  • Cape Mudge Lighthouse Mama Svenssonia + OBX @ the Cape Mudge Lighthouse
  • Another view of the lighthouse
  • Petroglyph Local First Nations have inhabited this area for 1000's of years. On this beach, near the lighthouse, more than 40 different petroglyphs have been identified. They're not easy to see though.
  • The waters off Cape Mudge Lighthouse Look at that roiling white water!
