About This Item

HPIM0406

I retired just shy of 22 years active duty with the United States Coast Guard. Would have stayed longer but too many wild rides in little boats on big waves took a toll on the back. I got to see a lot in my career, more than most. I started in St Louis Missouri where I operated the big cranes that dropped equipment to the buoy tenders that worked the rivers. After becomming a Boatswain's Mate, I traveled to Baltimore Maryland where I became certified as a rescue boat coxswain and a law enforcement petty officer working the upper Chesapeake Bay. I moved on to Key West Florida with the Mobile Aerostat Detachment, if I tell you more I may have to shoot you. Then it was back to the rivers, Paducah Kentucky, preventing and/or tracking polution in the rivers. Another trip to Key West to be the First Lieutennant on the USCGC SHEARWATER (WSES-3) until she was decommissioned. Home again to South Carolina at Georgetown Station. This was my favorite station, and I was all set to be the Executive Petty Officer when I was ordered to become an Instructor instead. So off to Yorktown Virginia where for the first 3 years I instructed navigation, team coordination and other essentials at Boatswain's Mate A School and Coxwain C School. Staying in Yorktown another 3 years, or at least being based there, I was able to travel to all coastlines of the United States as an evaluator for the UTB Standardization Team. From Alaska to Puerto Rico, if there was a Coast Guard Station with a UTB, I have been there. The Coast Guard then did something very strange. They merged two ratings that, other than navigation, had nothing in common. Quartermasters, who had previously took on the responsibilities of Signalman when that rate was dissolved, became Boatswain's Mates. The bonus for me was that a job that had been traditionally a Quartermaster was now available to me....Navigation Chief on the USCGC DALLAS (WHEC-716). So off I go to join my ship in Rota Spain and just in time for the second Gulf War. Shock and Awe man, Shock and Awe. When our time was up in the Mediteranean we returned home to our home port of Charleston South Carolina and spent a lot of time in the Southern Caribbean Sea hunting for the elusive Caribbean Snow, of which we confiscated tons and tons. Now I am retired, watching the beach, wishing I was back at sea. I hope my coin can have as many great adventures as I did.....Fair Winds and Following Seas....
