About This Item

“But happy thought! Why cannot we walk outside like the meteor? Why cannot we launch into space through the scuttle? What enjoyment it would be to feel oneself thus suspended in ether, more favored than the birds who must use their wings to keep themselves up!”

The first person to fly free, untethered in space was Bruce McCandless II. On February 7, 1984 during the tenth flight of a Space Shuttle (mission 41-B), McCandless floated from the cargo bay into outer space, 150 nautical miles above Earth, and became a human satellite.

He described the experience as “a heck of a big leap.”

Picked Bruce up from King of the Mountain II in Houston, TX. It is sitting in Johnson Space Center at this moment, on my desk. I will see if I can hook it to a geocacher heading for another NASA site...
...Feb 6th: Sent it to Johnson Space Center, where it made the rounds before being deposited in a cache in King's Park.
Funny Story: I sent it with a bunch of engineers who had never used a GPS before. They said that they had a hard time figuring out the GPS, and were easily distracted in their investigations - "Look what I can do!" (One engineer runs across a field with the unit) "I just ran 4.6 miles per hour!" but they accomplished the mission.
