Travel in Scandinavia, reminding us that the Viper (or Adder) is really an animal, with its own important role in the ecosystem. If set free elsewhere, I wouldn't mind seeing it visiting Korpo/Korppoo, the viper-spotting summer paradise of ours (rthomasl + aell65). Avoid rarely visited caches.
The European Viper (Vipera berus) is one of three different snakes that exist in Finland. It's also the only poisonous one.
Due to this (being poisonous) it's feared/hated. Some people routinely kill them whenever they stumble upon them. Like my grandfather (long since passed away). They (my grandparents on my mothers side) lived in the archipelago outside Turku, Finland. He was a nature (bird) lover, but this hatred towards Vipers I could never really understand.
Nowadays we (me and my geocaching wife aell65) own my grandparents old house (together with my brother), and spend lots of time there - especially in the summer. Not one summer (as far as I can tell) has gone, without us catching a glimpse of at least one Viper. Can't say I love the animal (and if you have kids running around barefoot, you sort of get a bit nervous, if one representative of the "breed" has made your garden its territory - they don't like to move around once they've settled). Nevertheless, nowadays, I WOULDN'T kill a Viper. They keep the populations of mice and such, on a tolerable level, and they belong to the fauna of Finland.
And, both me and aell65, can't but admire the beauty of this animal.
