About This Item

The 330mph Spark Plug

This is a spark plug from a NHRA Top Fuel Dragster. These 8000+ HP rockets travel the quarter mile in less than 4.3 seconds at over 330mph! When they hit the throttle these dragsters pull more G-Forces than the space shuttle does at takeoff!

Each of the 8 cylinders has 2 of these 14mm spark plugs in it. They are fired by two 44-ampere magnetos. Normal ignition timing is 58-65 degrees BTDC. (This is a dramatically greater spark advance than in a gasoline engine as "nitro" and alcohol burn far slower.) Directly after launch the timing is typically decreased by about 25 degrees for a short time as this gives the tires time to reach their correct shape. The ignition system limits the engine speed to 8400 rpm. The ignition system provides an initial 50,000 volts and 1.2 amperes. The long duration spark (up to 26 degrees) provides energy of 950 millijoules.

They are not the plugs you put in your Honda Accord. :)

Liz & Bob did a awesome job putting an insane amount of mileage on my little spark plug. Thank you so much. I'll be putting it back out in the near future!

Marvin J gave us this travel bug in March 2009, and although we were not able to get it to any race tracks, we did get some mileage on it by taking it to Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Alberta, and British Columbia, Canada, and North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland, U.S.A. We handed the travel bug back to Marvin J at the Grand Strand Geocachers Christmas party last night, and hope it will travel safely to many race tracks and accomplish its goals. Thank you, Marvin J for sharing this travel bug with us.
