About This Item

GoldGerman_s.jpg

This Gold Edition German Geocoin is named in honour of the Hawker Hurricane and the brave pilots who flew them from North Weald, Essex during the Battle of Britain.

Although the Hawker Hurricane is always viewed as the poor cousin to the Spitfire, it was responsible for over 70% of Luftwaffe losses. There were 32 Hurricane Squadrons (compared with 19 Spitfire) including Squadrons 56 and 151 based at North Weald.

The Hurricane was not as fast as the Spitfire (or the ME109) but it had a better turning circle, was a great gun platform and could soak up an enormous amount of battle damage and still remain flying. While the Spitfire was better equipped to dogfight ME109s, without the Hurricane, and its devastating attacks on the Luftwaffe, the Battle of Britain would have been lost and the world would be a very different place as a result.

This was originally released as a replica in an attempt to discourage those lovely non-muggles who like to "collect" (ie steal) other people's geocoins. But that didn't seem to work.

Please do not log this geocoin if you have not gone to the trouble of finding it in a physical cache. No Event caches please. Logs suspected of being virtual swaps will be deleted.

This is not a regular trading item. This geocoin is a travel bug with a mission. If you do not intend to log your visit, please do not take this item. Please try to place it in another cache within a fortnight.

By pure coincident I came to this cache with a German Geocoin and found a German Geocoin already in here, but, it wasn’t any old coin, but another one owned by cacher ‘qichina’, who only dropped it off yesterday!
I moved this Geocoin to another appropriate cache nearby.

What fun indeed. 👎

Mr Jones has disappeared back to the US with my coin and that's the end of his short-lived expedition into geocaching. No contact after 9 months, and he's cancelled his email address.

Thanks Tony. You're a great ambassador for your employer and country.
