About This Item

CPP6ZH front

This story begins at Whittier Alaska, a small town located on the western edge of Prince William Sound in south central Alaska that was established during world war two as a military supply port. In 1982, during the final part of my buddy's open water dive certification class at Whittier Alaska in Diver's Cove, I decided to have a little fun. The water conditions where good for June with around 30 feet of visibility and the bottom was covered in various types of kelp, colorful sea cucumbers and Sea Stars, Bandit Shrimp and the occasional flounder. At 5M under water I was following behind the class and realized that the dive would be ending soon. Looking over the bottom I picked up a nice huge purple red Sunburst Sea Star (Evasterias Echinosomo, ~98 cm in diameter, weight ~5 kg) and swam up over the top of my buddy and gently dropped it on the lower half of one of his legs... He was too interested in this new underwater world at first, paying no attention to the increased drag the critter added to his hydrodynamics and after swimming awhile, believing he been fouled with some ribbon kelp, he was totally surprised and convinced he had been attacked by a giant predatory Sunburst! (until he saw the myriad of bubbles escaping around my cold water mask that is)...
