Day 3 - Had breakfast with the family in the RV before leaving the campsite. Drove up along the Mississippi River and St. Croix rivers. A brief portion of our travels had us cross the river into Wisconsin, where I had hoped to pick up my first cache in that state. Isn't it crazy and amazing that I live so close to Wisconsin and still haven't cached there. Anyhow, the only regular cache along our route was going to end up a DNF as it was a simple hide, but I'm pretty sure it has gone missing. Arrived at Afton State Park. Checked in for the "MnGCA Fall Event" geocache event. We brought along a crock-pot of chili to share during the potluck lunch. Met up with fellow geocaching friend mdockman and his son. We spent several hours in the morning devoted to caching the "temporary" caches placed by the event organizers. Although it was fun to find a bunch of new caches with the family, we wouldn't be able to log these caches, as they are not published. Along the many beautiful trails along the St. Croix river we did pick up the Afton State Park Safari cache. After the lunch we left the event and made our way further up the St. Croix river to William O'Brien State Park where we setup camp for the day and a half we had planned to "rest". We went out for a late afternoon walk. There were 3 geocaches in the park, including another State Park safari cache. We headed to the first stage of the safari cache only to find out that that second waypoint was at least .5 miles further and 1 miles from the RV. Too much for the 2-yr old today, so back to camp. After grilled chicken sandwiches, a beautiful campfire and s'mores, the entire family watched a movie together in the RV.....really "roughing it". 2 official geocaches found today, another half dozen or so "temp" caches found.
