About This Item

Dewey Duck

In the comics, Donald Duck's twin sister, Della, sent her triplet sons to their uncle's house for a visit with a letter that read,

"Dear Donald:

I am sending your angel nephews Louie, Huey and Dewey, to stay with you while their father is in the hospital. A giant firecracker exploded under his chair. The little darlings are so playful. I hope you enjoy them.

Your cousin,

Della."

Della and the boys' father, were run so ragged by the mischievous trio and their dangerous antics, that they basically dumped the Nephews into Donald's lap and fled. The three ducklings were abandoned to their irascible uncle, whom they relished to torture. Over time they became less burdensome to Donald, who grew to love them as their own father, and is still caring for them well into their teens. The Nephews are devout members of the scouting organization called Junior Woodchucks.

Fun-loving and rambunctious, Huey, Dewey, and Louie are three mischievous kids out to have a good time. They never mean to cause a problem (well, almost never), but havoc seems to follow "the boys" wherever they go. It's not that they're so reckless -- they are Junior Woodchucks, after all; it's usually the fault of their vigilant guardian, beloved "Unca' Donald." Even when they try to do something nice for him, he can foul up their plans with his suspicious nature. Still, while they are good kids at heart, their motives are not always so angelic. They've been known to play hookey from school, inflict practical jokes on their susceptible uncle, and wreak general havoc.

The Titanic Trio’s address is 1313 Webfoot Walk, Duckburg, Calisota, USA (**), with their Uncle Donald. The names of the Nephews were originally inspired by contemporary political figures Huey P. Long of Louisiana, Thomas E. Dewey of New York (but it is also stated that Dewey was named after Admiral George Dewey (1837-1917) of the Spanish-American War), and Louie Schmidt(t) (a friend of a Disney artist). The Nephews' full names were Huebert (Huey), Deuteronomy (Dewey), and Louis (Louie) Duck. As identical triplets, Huey, Dewey and Louie are impossible to tell apart — except by the colors they wear, red for Huey, blue for Dewey and green for Louie.

Complicating this scheme is the phantom fourth nephew, who has been spotted in occasional comic book panels over the years, a result of artistic errors that go uncaught by editors and proofreaders until it's too late to take him out. His name is Phooey, and nobody is quite sure what color he wears.

When these errors have been noticed by the editors it has been too late too do anything about it, even though when they have noticed it long before the books were published. When one of these stories was published in Norway the Norwegian editor notified the press beforehand and they allowed readers to name the fourth nephew.

In Denmark a popular TV show had a phone-vote where viewers named the fourth nephew Fup. (Huey, Dewey, Louie are Rip, Rap, Rup, and Fup means fake/phoney.)

(If ANYBODY knows where Phooey Duck is, he is invited to join this race with his cousins!!)

** Duckburg is located in the state of Calisota at the American Pacific coast. Duckburg is a medium sized city. It's not a small town or a village nor is it a big metropolis.
