Bud's Coke travel bug would like to travel the United States or other countries where steelmaking is still part of the economy - past or present.
This travel bud is called Bud's Coke to honor my father who worked for Mesta Machine Company in Homestead, Pennsylvania for 45 years. He worked in this foundry at a set of furnaces on the second floor. My father stated that the fumes and heat from the six coke ovens on the first floor would rise to the second floor. There was no breathing asparatus for the workers at this time. This piece of coke came from the Hazelwood Coke Plant on Second Avenue in Pittsburgh. It is no longer in operation. This plant had 750 jobs and was once linked to the beginnings of steelmaking. Coke, or de-gasified coal has been used as a fuel in blast furnaces of more than a century. In coking, coal is superheated until sulfur and other gases are drawn off. Then the coke is mixed with iron ore and limestone to produce liquid iron, which is then used to make steel.
