Current Goal

My goal is to travel around the Great Lakes hiding in caches along the way. I hail from Two Harbors, Minnesota an iron ore shipping port. The Edna G tugboat is picture on the state charm. It sits near the iron ore docks where summer tours are available.

About This Item

Great Lakes Tug Bug

It's a Minnesota state shape charm with a picture of the Edna G tugboat.

The Edna G was built in 1896 by the Cleveland Ship Building Company of Cleveland, Ohio. she was purchased by the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad for approximately $50,000, and was named after the railroad president's daughter, Edna Greatsinger. this coal-burning, steam-powered tugboat was the last one of its kind operating on Lake Superior. She measures 110 feet in length and has a beam of 23 feet. Her average coal consumption was 25 tons a week. She was designed specifically for transporting ore carriers to and from the Two Harbors docks, and for towing barges and smaller steam ships. Her crew consisted of the Captain, the Chief Engineer, a deckhand and a fireman. She only left the Two Harbors area once in her 85 years of operation, when she was requisitioned to tow vessels up and down the Atlantic coast during WWI. the Edna G was retired on January 6, 1981.

Got it close to Lake Michigan, but won't be going any closer on this trip. I'll try to drop by another lake soon...

Great little history & souvenir to share with us. Not sure if I'll be able to get it on the North Shore before we head out. However, if not, I'll try to get it close to Lake Michigan when I'm down there in a few weeks. Thanks for sharing!
