In the year 876 the Vikings under King Erik Godwinson decided to fit up two longships to discover new settlement areas, because the Vikings of the North had outgrown potential of their Scandinavian homeland.
King Erik chose the island of Helgoland as the ideal starting point for this expedition. The leadership has been confered on Eskil Olafson and Svan Unasson, two experienced steermen. During they were busy with setting up the longships and the crew King Erik ordered to mint two artfully coins as a sign of his power and for the success of the expedition. They have been placed on a secure location on Helgoland before the beginning of the journey.
At late summer of the year 876 Eskil Olafson and Svan Unasson departed to Helgoland accompanied by 46 brave northmen on each boat. Their purpose was to get the precious coins and to start the expedition from there. But when they arrived the North Sea north of Skagen they were hit by a dreadful thunderstorm and they never returned. Since that day they are lost and their mission fell into oblivion.
However now you hold one of the legendary coins in your hands and in memoriam of its eventful past I ask you to carry it out into the world and help it to go on its journey after all. Please be aware of a time limit: bear in mind that the coin should return to cache [Berlin GC1JVV4] in the year 2011 to report of its adventurous impressions.

Im Jahre 876 n. Chr. beschloss der Wikingerkönig Erik Godwinson aufgrund sich verschlechternder Lebensbedingungen zwei Langschiffe auszustatten, um neue Siedlungsgebiete zu entdecken.
Als Ausgangspunkt sollte die Insel Helgoland dienen. Eskil Olafson und Svan Unasson, zwei erfahrene Schiffsführer, wurde die Leitung der Schiffe übertragen. Während sie noch mit der Ausstattung der Langschiffe und deren Mannschaft beschäftigt waren, ließ König Erik als Zeichen seiner Macht und zum guten Gelingen der Expedition zwei kunstvolle Münzen erstellen. Sie wurden bereits vor Reisebeginn an einem sicheren Ort auf Helgoland gebracht.
Im Spätsommer 876 brachen Eskil Olafson und Svan Unasson mit jeweils 46 tapferen Nordmännern zum Treffpunkt nach Helgoland auf, um dort die wertvollen Münzen zu empfangen und ihre Expedition zu starten. Als sie jedoch nördlich des heutigen Skagen die Nordsee erreichten, traf sie ein fürchterliches Unwetter, aus dem sie nicht wieder auftauchten.
Seit diesen Tagen gelten sie als verschollen und ihr Auftrag geriet in Vergessenheit. Aber ihr haltet jetzt eine der sagenumwobenen Münzen in euren Händen und ich bitte Euch, sie im Andenken an ihre bewegte Vergangenheit weit in die Welt hinaus zu tragen und ihr dabei zu helfen, doch noch ihre Reise zu unternehmen.
