About This Item

This geocoin is Mimbres 2.0 in black nickel by Crake Productions, honoring Mimbres pottery of the American Southwest. Two rather odd looking fish are on one side of the coin, with an unusual geometric pattern on the reverse. I must learn more about these fish...comments welcome!

I came out to Kansas City, Missouri for a work trip. I ran out to grab a couple of caches and was pleasantly surprised by a handsome geocoin. It's in good shape, but it looks like somebody drilled halfway though it on the side.

I'm not much of a fisherman myself. My dad and I went out what I was a kid a few times, I don't recall ever catching anything be it in a pond, lake, or ocean. Now that I've got kids of my own I've only attempted it once. I can't even catch anything in a tiny pond where the fish are stocked and the locals knew what they liked to eat. I think they had me putting bits of hot dog on there if I'm not mistaken. Well we utterly failed and the younger boys lost interest. But my daughter, the eldest, seemed to really enjoy just being out there fishing.

I may be a poor excuse for a man since I can't catch anything, but at least my daughter still loves me ;)

Thanks for the coin. I'll show it off a bit and bring it with me to California so it's a least on the Pacific side of the country.

Dropped in Constellation Cache number 9 - didn't have any recent good fish stories, so I thought I would at least drop it by a huge river! Maybe that'll help it collect more fish stories that way?

Picked this coin up during the CITO event in Excelsior Springs at the end of April. Keep forgeting to log it. Headed to Lake Rathbun in southern Iowa this weekend for some cachin' and splashin'. Looks like a great place to send it on it's way.

My grandfather took my mom to a nearby creek when she was a child and despite the fact that it was illegal, waded into the muddy creek to do some "noodling". Noodling is a scary practice. You corner a fish in a hole in the wall of a stream and grab it before tossing it in a bucket. Grandpa worked his way down the bank feeling below the water line for holes and something inside. After a while he called out, "Louise!! I found a big one! Come over here and put your hand over the hole so he doesn't get away. I'm going back to the road to get a bucket out of the truck. I'll be right back!" And so Mom as a young girl waded down into the muck and put her hands over the muddy opening having no idea what was inside. But when he got to the road, a neighbor pulled up and began to talk. Grandpa couldn't tell the neighbor what he was doing or that his daughter was with him, so they stood and talked about this and that for a long while as my mother's mind raced with images of the monster inside that hole. Eventually he came back with a bucket, reached inside and grabbed hold of something, and out emmerged a very large river catfish to my mother's relief!
