I finally succeeded in making a detailed proxy of this coin. I took a mold off the original, cast it in epoxy resin, painted it a shiny gold and even antiqued it for added effect. This is an actual replica of the original coin though just the front side.
It is unfortunate we can't send out the real coin, since the nicest ones have a way of disappearing. But I wanted to send out something with the real look and feel of a coin rather than a xerox copy. Thanks to Godindrak for giving me the idea to use epoxy resin.
You can also take this idea and use it to "collect" some of your favorite coins without removing them from circulation. I would much rather see people use this method to give them something to keep rather than taking coins that others have spent a lot of money on.
I would just like for it to visit as many caches as possible to share this idea with others.
This proxy was made by pressing the original into clay. Rub some liquid soap on the coin first so it will pop back out easily and keep bits of clay from getting stuck in the crevices. It only takes a small amount of resin to make a coin so one bottle could make dozens of projects. It is made from a simple epoxy resin you can find at most art supply stores and, if done correctly, will hold nearly as much detail as the original. You could easily put a little dye in the resin and leave it unpainted to create a "suncatcher" type coin which I may attempt with my next project as well.
I know there are some that have an issue with proxies. Most are just laminated xerox copies and not very interesting. That's why I initiated this little experiment with a realistic 3-d replica. Perhaps the coin makers will eventually manufacture proxy coins the way they do replacement TB tags but until then, I think this is the best option.
