About This Item

bingen

The front side shows a portrait of Hildegard of Bingen. The backside is inspired by the miniature from the Lucca Codex of her book "Liber divinorum operum". It shows mother earth with the four seasons. In order to materialize a detailed illustration both sides are done in 3D. The transparent red color refers to the basic teint of the original. Hildegard of Bingen (German: Hildegard von Bingen; Latin: Hildegardis Bingensis; 1098 – 17 September 1179), also known as Blessed Hildegard, Saint Hildegard, and Sybil of the Rhine, was a German abbess, author, counselor, linguist, naturalist, scientist, philosopher, physician, herbalist, poet, channeller, visionary, composer, and polymath. Elected a magistra by her fellow nuns in 1136, she founded the monasteries of Rupertsberg in 1150 and Eibingen in 1165. She was a composer with an extant biography from her own time. One of her works, the Ordo Virtutum, is an early example of liturgical drama. She wrote theological, botanical and medicinal texts, as well as letters, liturgical songs, poems, and the first surviving morality play, while supervising brilliant miniature Illuminations.
