Current Goal

This coin is meant to travel and spread awareness about the fact that we should always be careful on the road and pay special attention to motorcyclists. Being courteous and checking carefully to all those sharing the road with us should be a priority. Whoever we are, we all want to get home to our families safe and sound. Look left, look right, look bike

About This Item

This coin is part of the Todie's Wild Ride bike safety and awareness race started by Rockin Roddy. On August 12, 2008, Tod Phillips, one third of Team Rod & Tod w/KAboom, was riding a motorcycle when he was killed in an accident caused by a driver who didn't see him.

Tod was just 49 years old.

A special thanks to JohnMac56 for the cointest and releasing this traveler and messenger

I discovered this beautiful, yet hauntingly sad geocoin today when 3blackcats pulled it out of the Pretty in Pink geocache this afternoon. I used to ride a motorcycle in my younger days, but took a rather small bike on the 405 freeway one evening late at night. Driving next to semi trucks that, with one wrong lane change, would have made hamburger out of me, I made the decision to get off the bike. I've never been on one since.

My dad laid that same bike down about a month later and destroyed his knee and had to have knee replacement surgery. He was lucky and didn't have to pay the ultimate price that Todie made. Looking at his birthdate brought it home even more since he was only a year younger than I was at the time of his passing.

Thanks for putting this geocoin out.

My friend Webfoot and I were starting up Soledad Canyon when he suddenly told me to pull over. He had found the cache at this turnout but I hadn't, and he was being a "giver" as he put it. Little did he know that in this cache was this special coin. When I opened the container I immediately recognized this coin. I am a rider and have a couple of the Look Twice coins. So far I have been lucky enough on my bike but I know a few folks who haven't been as lucky, all in varying degrees of severity. My friend Jorge laid his bike down to avoid a left-turning driver and almost lost his leg. My friend Ed was just about run off the road which sent his bike out of control. Ed had major road rash but miraculously suffered little damage. His bike, however, was totalled. My friend Randy Phillips, a retired police officer, was killed by a wrong-way driver on the freeway a few months back.

I know all motorcyclists are not as safe as they could be but a good number of us are careful and vigilant. Please PLEASE be careful and look twice. You may be safe in your metal cocoon but the motorcyclist you hit is not as protected. I'm posting a picture of my bike here in memory of Tod and Randy. I'm sure they are feeling the freedom of the warm wind in their faces.

I will move this coin along soon. I'll try to put it on a bad-ass bike road in memory of my brothers and sisters who have lost their lives doing what they love...
