This little dragon is named for the Caliciviridae family of viruses, which includes human norovirus- the leading cause of foodborne disease outbreaks worldwide. Human norovirus is highly contagious and infectious. It causes gastroenteritis that typically lasts 2-3 days. The most common mode of transmission is through the fecal-oral route.
The first documented outbreak occured in Norwalk, OH, thus giving it the name Norwalk virus. It is also referred to as winter vomiting disease (many outbreaks occur during the winter months) and is also commonly known as the stomach flu. Outbreaks occur in areas with large numbers of people that are in close contact with each other (e.g. restaurants, hospitals, nursing homes, daycare centers, hotels, prisons and cruise ships).
Calici also takes its name from Khaleesi, the mother of dragons in the Game of Thrones series.
