Current Goal

This travel bug was worn by ranch-horse Khirla. She is one of the three Geocaching horses of Sandy Creek Ranch. Khirla wants her shoe to be photographed on the track at Belmont Park where the Belmont Stakes are run. She also would like to see photographs of her travel bug along the way and with other horses anywhere in the world.

About This Item

Khirla and Shalla

This is one of three horseshoe travel bugs that are hopefully racing to the Triple Crown tracks of horse racing fame. The Triple Crown events are the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky; Preakness Stakes at Pimlico in Baltimore, Maryland; and Belmont Stakes at Belmont Race Track in Elmont, New York.

The three Sandy Creek Ranch Geohorses live in the mountainous eastern region of San Diego County, California. They spend their idle time munching grass and oats on the sixty-four acre ranch. Their favorite activity is to go trail riding and Geocaching with the Sandy Creek Cowboys. The Sandy Creek Cowboys are also known as Geocachers DennisB, Carpenter from Hell, and Harmon of SD Rowdies.

Together the three horses and the three cowboys have found and placed lots of Geocaches along the rugged trails of the Laguna Mountains that surround Sandy Creek Ranch. They have ridden up to seventeen trail miles just to score a single first-to-find Geocache along the famous Pacific Crest Trail. In the process the horses wore out their shoes.

Shalla, Khirla, and Happy demanded that one each of their old shoes must be registered as official Geocaching travel bugs. It may seem silly to you that a horse can express a demand but don’t forget that horses and cowboys can talk to each other. Fact is that horses are about the only creatures that will put up with cowboy talk. Ain’t that odd?

Please take good care of this old horseshoe. Keep it moving, moving … raw hide!

Took it "Eastward Ho" just outside the San Diego County line on our way out to Desert View Tower today. A bit chilly, but a nice ride with clear skies and low winds.

Khirla's Horseshoe has been on winter layup at our ranch since being retrieved from Lost Treasure of Manny A. Cacher on October 12th, 2003. (Sound of smacking forehead over not logging that sooner...)

She weathered the Cedar Fire safely, but pulled up lame after being evacuated. She enjoyed a long rest in the mild winter at pasture in San Diego's east county, and is ready to get back to work.

Khirla's Horseshoe is now in serious training for her journey to Belmont Park in New York, where the racing season begins in May.

We will find an appropriate race (cache) in which to enter Khirla's Horseshoe - one that will improve her odds of making it to her goal.
