O Alentejo tem sido ao longo dos séculos uma das principais regiões de pastorícia do país. Associado a esta actividade surge o chocalho, que é descrito como um instrumento metálico que produz um som característico e que tem como principal finalidade, facilitar a localização do gado disperso pelas pastagens.
Pensa-se que a fabricação destes instrumentos, no Alentejo, data pelo menos da Idade Média, sendo então uma das muitas actividades desenvolvidas pelos judeus e árabes ferreiros. No entanto, apesar da existência dos chocalheiros se antiga na região, só no inicio do Séc. XIX esta profissão foi oficialmente reconhecida.
Existe uma grande diversidade de chocalhos, variando no modelo, no tamanho e na utilização a que se destinam. No entanto, os mais procurados, na região do Alentejo, são essencialmente de dois tipos, o "picadeiro" e o "reboleiro".
Apesar da procura dos chocalhos depender essencialmente das necessidades dos criadores de ovinos, bovinos e equinos verifica-se que é cada vez maior a demanda destes produtos para fins decorativos.

The Alentejo has been for several centuries one of Portugal`s main region of cattle growing and shepherd. Along with this activity comes the rattle of jingle witch is a metallic instrument that produces a characteristic sound which helps to find the cattle when it is lost or spread in the fields.
The manufacture of the rattle in Alentejo goes back to the middle ages and was developed by Arabian and jewish blacksmiths. Nevertheless, although the rattle making is ancient in this region, and particularly in Alcáçovas, it was only the beginning of the XIXth century that this activity was officially recognised.
The wide variety of bells which differ in model, size and purpose. The more requested models in Alentejo are the "picadeiro" and the "reboleiro" Although, the demand for bells depend strongly on the needs of the cattle growers, its use as a decorative piece becoming more and more popular.
