To stay the hell away from Reno, Nevada.
The family and I spent a long weekend in Reno over MLK weekend 2010. I had tried to convince my wife before booking the trip that the city had deteriorated horribly in recent years (heck, it was a hole when I stayed there back in the mid-90's). The recession really hasn't been kind, and Reno is now basically some tarnished silver ingots (the big casinos) surrounded by pot metal (everything else). I won't pretend the entire stay was terrible, but after 4 days and 3 nights that included food poisoning, endless driving in search of kids' snow boots and may too much money spent on way too little entertainment, I think it's safe to say we won't be going back any time in the foreseeable future. If you've never been, hold on to this pretty little trinket for a few days, and use it to crack open a few beers while mulling the idea that it's the only piece of Reno you will ever need to see.
