Travel to military bases around the world, especially in each of the US states and Territories. Meet some troopers, and make a few parachute jumps along the way.
Pewter 82nd Airborne Division shoulder patch key ring, purchased at the Military Clothing Sales Store, Fort Bragg, NC.
Long story short:
The 82d Infantry Division was formed for service in the World War. When it was noticed that soldiers from each state in the Union were assigned to the division, it was named the "All American" division. The red, white and blue "AA" patch became the shoulder sleeve insignia. The division gained fame for service in France due to the actions of its distinguished troopers, including Sgt.Alvin York.
At the beginning of World War II, following the successful test to deliver troops to the battlefield by parachute, the 82d was redesignated as the 82d Airborne Division. The "Airborne" tab was added above the square "AA" patch. Troopers were borne to the battlefields in Europe from the air via gliders and parachutes. Combat jumps included Sicily, Salerno, Normandy and Holland.
Troopers of the Division have served around the world with combat/"Peace Keeping" duty in the Dominican Republic, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Iraq, and Afghanistan, to name a few.
The rest, as they say, is history...and it continues to be written!
