This geocoin commemorates the Northern California city of San Francisco.
San Francisco, affectionately known throughout Northern California simply as "The City," is a focal point of the San Francisco Bay Area, whose overall population is over 7 million. San Francisco's famous hallmarks include its cable cars and the Golden Gate Bridge, which are recognized worldwide.
San Francisco was once controlled by Spain, and was named Yerba Buena. In early 1847, it was claimed in the name of the United States and renamed San Francisco. The California gold rush starting in 1848 led to a large boom in population, including considerable immigration. Between January 1848 and December 1849, the population of San Francisco increased from 1,000 to 25,000.
Today San Francisco has the second-highest population density only behind New York City. The City and County of San Francisco is the fourth-largest city in California, with a population of 776,733 people according to the 2000 census.
