The USS Arizona was hit by four 800-kg armor-piercing bombs. One of the bombs penetrated the wood-topped steel deck near the number two gun turret and exploded deep within the ship. The explosion ignited the forward powder magazine destroying the forward part of the ship and killing Captain Franklin B. Van Valkenburgh, Admiral Isaac C. Kidd and most of her crew. The USS Arizona Memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day 1962. It is built over the remains of the sunken battleship USS Arizona, the final resting place for many of the 1,177 crewmen killed on December 7, 1941.
