IN MEMORY OF THE CREW OF SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA:
The Space Shuttle Columbia lifted off on January 16th, 2003 for its 28th flight into space. This was the 113th flight in the 22 year space shuttle program.
The shuttle crew consisted of seven: Shuttle Commander Rick Husband, Pilot William McCool, Mission Specialists Michael Anderson, David M. Brown, Kalpana Chawla, and Laurel B. Clark, and Payload Specialist Ilan Ramon.
Space Shuttle Columbia was scheduled to return to Florida at 9:16 am on February 1st, 2003 when disaster struck at 9:00 am. Shuttle Columbia was at an altitude of about 203,000 feet (nearly 39 miles), traveling at 12,500 mph, enduring temperatures of nearly 3000 degrees, when Mission Control suddenly lost all data and voice contact. Residents of Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas all reported hearing a big bang and seeing flames in the sky at this same time. Space Shuttle Columbia and the crew of seven were lost.
In the 42 years of the United States space program there had never been an accident during the descent back to earth. Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after liftoff on January 28th, 1986 also killing all seven crew members and the Apollo Spacecraft caught fire on the launch pad which killed three on January 27th, 1967.
This Travel Bug was created by “ennis” January 5th, 2003, as the real shuttle crew were preparing themselves for liftoff. On January 8th, 2003 "Travel Bug Columbia Fly Again" left Illinois and was launched into its first cache (Traveler's Rest Stop #3 -Red-White & Blue by UsMorrows) and there it remained until January 31st, 2003. While it rested at this location, the real Shuttle Columbia launched, fulfilled its mission and began to prepare for its return. As you can read in the log, "galpd320" was the first to pick up this travel bug on January 31st and was in possession of it the next day when disaster struck. With his help we have now dedicated this travel bug to the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia.
May God comfort the families, friends and co-workers of these great American heroes.

SEARCHING FOR COLUMBIA TRAVEL BUG !
Visited Five Springs Campground and was not able to locate the cache. There are a few very difficult rocks to climb that MAY lead up to the cache site. My wife and I decided it was not safe for me to try to scale up these rocks alone this far up in this remote mountain area. A local muggle said he had seen a cool whip type container with stuff inside a month or two ago, but it was now gone from where he had seen it. To anyone who may find Columbia Fly Again - it would be appreciated if it could be put back into an active cache or bug motel, so that it could continue on its mission. It appears that 11 people are still following this bugs journey. Thanks.
