Despite what it says above, this geocoin will always be in the hands of me, Hemlock. If you see me at an event, feel free to ask to see the geocoin so you can log it.
A tradition among Groundspeak volunteers is that if one volunteer shows their geocoin to another volunteer and they don't have theirs, the one without coin must buy the other a drink.
This geocoin commemorates the Northern California city of Eureka.
The Greek word "Eureka" has appeared on the California state seal since 1849 and means "I have found it." The words were probably intended to refer to the discovery of gold in California. Archimedes, the famed Greek mathematician, is said to have exclaimed "Eureka!" when, after long study, he discovered a method of determining the purity of gold. "Eureka" was made the official state motto in 1963.
Eureka is the county seat of Humboldt County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 26,128. Eureka was founded in 1856, and soon became an important port city for northern California's logging and commercial fishing industries.
