The front of the coin features an outline of the state of Mississippi, with its many forested hills and rivers. Superimposed on the state is the compass rosette and geocacher, symbolic of our hobby and taken from the MSGA website. Surrounding them are a pair of catfish in the classic yin and yang formation, symbolic of the many dualities in Mississippi that together make the state strong. Catfish were chosen because Belzoni, MS is known as the catfish capitol of the world, and the catfish industry is an important part of Mississippi economics and a major export.

The reverse of the coin features a steamboat sailing into the sunset on the Mississippi River, with the structure of a bridge silhouetted in the background. The Mississippi River, from which the state takes its name, is the 2nd largest river in the U.S., contains water from 31 states and two Canadian provinces, and remains one of the most important trade and transportation routes in the U.S. This scene is reminiscent of four locations along the western border of the state. Mighty Mississippi is one of the world's greatest rivers. And it is a natural resource of global significance — Neotropical songbirds and over 40% of North America’s ducks, geese, swans and wading birds rely on the Mississippi River as a flyway, providing them direction, resting places, and food for epic seasonal migrations.

Almost invariably, visitors from across the country and around the world, make it a point to see the Mississippi during their stays. Many of us pass by or over it daily, though we may not always take the time to appreciate it.
