When I was very young, my father worked for the Arizona Park Service, and we lived in a little government shack (one of a row of seven little government shacks) about halfway up Mt. Lemmon. We all shared a central water well and one of my daily chores was to fill gallon jugs every morning. I have such vivid childhood memories of living on the moutain! One is this: my father once came home from three days of forest-fire fighting with a gunny sack full of - ladybugs! He said that they had swarmed to escape the fire, and he captured them and brought them home to release in our backyard garden. So if you see a ladybug on Mt. Lemmon, it could very well be the descendant of one that my father brought up to the mountain.
We moved away from Arizona before I started first grade and it was more than fifty years before I returned to visit my old home. The ragged one-lane gravel road (with no guardrails!) that we drove up and down every day is now the Mt. Lemmon Highway and that row of little houses is long gone - the best I can tell from looking over old maps with my father is that our former neighborhood is now part of the park. But much to my surprise I picked up this unactivated ladybug trackable in a cache in New Mexico while on the way here to Arizona and thought that this would be a fine oportunity to tell the story of the Ladybugs of Mt. Lemmon. This trackable was released in Tucson and hopes to travel wherever ladybugs can be found.
