    8:50 PM (36/37) - Cape Fear Event

I decided to get this one last one before heading back to Greensboro. As there was a guy sitting close to the cache, I went inside and looked around. When I came out, he was gone, so I found the cache.

After that, I went back inside and bought a soda and water for my trip back.

Aw, man, this was a tough cache! Not so much to find--that was instant--but to find an access point! I parked in a parking lot, but did not notice a defined trailhead. I then circled the entire strip of land, but to no avail.

After coming back to almost the same spot, I saw a defined trail next to a high voltage sign. I took that, then went down some small paths, trying to follow my GPSr's bearing. It was dark, so I only had my flashlight's light to show me what was around. Eventually, I met up with a dead end due to thick foliage 150 yards or so to the cache. I went back to my car and continued closer to the original parking lot where I saw another access point. I think I would have seen this clearly enough during the day. I parked close to it and went out again.

I impatiently followed the trails and made a quick find. I then made the mistake of deciding to continue to the next cache.

I moved my car into a different campus parking lot and walked to this cache, flashlight in hand. I was prepared for a long search, as I remember being told five months earlier the caches along this stretch of the UNCW lawn were tricky. I arrived at the cache site only to be met with a baffling instant find. Huh.

I guess it's sometimes like that as well.

And, now, it was time for some bad experiences to motivate me to get on the road home.

Ah, this cache brought back memories! I was at this one briefly with my teammate for that particular leg and he couldn't find it while I was away at the sign cache. I came over after finding that one, but only to collect him as the scheduled time in Wilmington ran out and it was time to continue with the race the DeLorme Challenge had become. He convinced me to have a quick one-minute search and I only had time to search ground zero.

Five months later and a thousand caches later, I returned this evening and looked in a completely different place, taking it one hide method at a time. It was the first method, but I had to look within EPE and not get distracted with ground zero.

    6:30 PM (31/37) - Cape Fear Event

I said my goodbyes to budahpest and was back working solo. This cache came recommended, so I headed there before doing anything else.

The first "Dang!" came when I parked in a parking lot and saw I would have to cross a "moat" if I wanted to take the shortest distance to the cache. Fortunately, laziness won out and I moved the car and accessed the cache from another area. If I hadn't, I would have met with two more "Dang!" items: the fence and having to cross the moat.

The trail I walked brought back some memories. I was on this same trail when I came through Wilmington on my DeLorme run. There was another nearby cache, one at a bridge, I went for. This one was not on my radar because it came out a few days after my early July planning session.

I found the main cache and began the usual. Number 36. After that, I searched for the smaller cache and took a souvenir pencil. There's a cache up in my area that is the exact same as this. However, the maximum magic number is 200!
