Willem van Oranje (1533 - 1584)

Vader des Vaderlands

Al tijdens zijn leven krijgt Willem van Oranje de erenaam Vader des Vaderlands. Vanaf de negentiende eeuw wordt hij gezien als de grondlegger van het huidige Nederland. Door zijn leidende rol in de Nederlandse Opstand dwingt Willem van Oranje respect af bij vriend en vijand. Hij weet de verschillende groepen in de Nederlanden te verenigen in de strijd tegen de landsheer. Niet voor niets wordt hij al tijdens zijn leven de pater patriae, de Vader des Vaderlands, genoemd. In de vroege zeventiende eeuw strijdt de Nederlandse Republiek nog voor haar onafhankelijkheid. Toch beleeft zij al wel een grote economische en culturele bloei: de Gouden Eeuw. De trotse staat maakt voor Willem van Oranje een imposant grafmonument in de Nieuwe Kerk van Delft. Het toont Oranje als de stichter van de nieuwe staat. Het huidige Koninkrijk der Nederlanden wordt in 1813 gesticht. Het opkomende nationalisme zorgt voor een grote trots op het eigen verleden, dus dat van de Republiek. Nationale helden krijgen een standbeeld en worden daarmee letterlijk op een voetstuk geplaatst.

Father of the Nation

During his life, William of Orange gets the honorary title Father of the Nation. From the nineteenth century, he is seen as the founder of the present Netherlands. Through its leading role in forcing the Dutch Revolt by William of Orange respect from friend and foe. He knows the different groups in the Netherlands to unite in the fight against the ruler. Not for nothing has he been during his life patriae the Father, the Father of the Nation, said. In the early seventeenth century the Dutch Republic is fighting for its independence. Yet it already is experiencing a major economic and cultural prosperity: the Golden Age. The state is proud to William of Orange an impressive tomb in the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft. It shows Orange as the founder of the new state. The current Kingdom of the Netherlands founded in 1813. The emerging nationalism provides a great pride in its past, so that of the Republic. National heroes get a statue and thus literally on a pedestal.
